The nation of Mendev in northeastern Avistan is a nation shaped by conflict with Abyssal forces unlike anywhere else on Golarion. The people of this beleaguered land have struggled with the demonic rift of the Worldwound since the Aroden in 4606AR. Mendev is now in the middle of its Fourth Mendevian Crusade against the demons of that threaten the nations western border. Along with the pious and righteous, this crusade has attracted its fair share of mercenaries, outcasts, and ne’er-do-wells of all types hoping to take advantage of a war that has lasted for over a century.

Mendev is located at the very north of the continent of Avistan and its northern border consists of the towering ice cliffs of the Crown of the World. To Mendev’s east, marked by the Wardstones that help keep the abyssal taint at bay, is the Worldwound. To its west of the Estrovian Forest is the Lake of Mists and Veils, the vast body of water which separates Mendev from the neighboring nation of Khanduras in Casmaron. The Lake of Mists and Veils feeds the Sellen River, the waterway many crusaders travel to reach Mendev from throughout Avistan. To the south lies Numeria, separated by rivers along much of the border.

The inhabitants of Mendev are a strange mixture of peoples ranging from high-minded gallants to back-alley thugs. While many of the land’s inhabitants were swept here in the fanatic zeal of the Mendevian crusades, many are natives of this land whose families lived here long before the arrival of the Mendevian crusaders. Before the arrival of the Worldwound, Mendev was populated by exiled Khandurians, who had much in common culturally with the nation of Sarkor, which has now become the Worldwound. These exiled Khandurians tend to be treated as second-class citizens by the crusaders. This, unfortunately, makes them suspicious to the zealous crusaders of more traditional religions, and has lead to many Khandurians burning at the stake for their heretical beliefs.

Mendev is governed by Queen Galfrey, who rules Mendev from her seat in the fortress capital of Nerosyan. A warrior queen, Queen Galfrey is the absolute monarch of the crusader-state of Mendev. Even so, her direct control over Mendev and the Mendevian Crusades does not extend far beyond the walls of the capital city of Nerosyan. Further afield, the various regional and local commanders, not to mention religious figures exercise quite a bit of autonomy, such as the inquisitors under the command of Lord Hulrun of Kenabres.
